Student Profile

MS student on the course Laboratory QA/QC

"As a high school Science teacher, a course like this would have been very beneficial to my program of study before teaching any lab course. This is something high schools are missing Nationwide. It makes me wonder how many Science laboratories in schools are filled with old chemicals, inadequate or improper storage, inappropriate accessibility and substandard safety equipment. We need to teach this to all teachers and all students at the high school level. This should be required by law. It is only a matter of time before a lawsuit appears because of ignorance on the teacher's part. Excellent course! Thank you."

DTI D.E. classes of 2008, 2011, and 2014 (expected), PhD student/Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant, Soil and Water Science

"The distance education program offered through DTI gives people everywhere the opportunity to become a member of the Gator Nation. I am a two-time graduate of the D.E. program. I began in 2005 and earned my B.S. in horticulture in 2008. In May, 2011 I earned a Master's of Science in Sustainable Land, Resource, and Nutrient Management through the Soil and Water Science department. I am currently a distance education graduate research and teaching assistant as well as a PhD student in the Soil and Water Science department. I am also the graduate student member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Curriculum Committee for 2011-2012.

I earned two associate degrees from out of state, but my husband and I's careers prevented us from moving to Gainesville to finish my bachelor's degree. Additionally, a five hour daily commute from Orlando just wasn't economically or physically feasible. The D.E. program allows place-bound individuals, like me, the flexibility to attend classes while working, raising a family, and living somewhere else. Without the distance education program, I would not have finished my bachelor's degree nor gone on to graduate school. I have developed many professional relationships with fellow students from across the country and around the world.

My master's work focused on soil fertility and sustainable agriculture production in Haiti. I am now continuing that work for my PhD and will be traveling to Haiti to do some in-country field research. I have worked with International Programs, attended National professional society meetings and given presentations, networked, and interacted with others in the environmental sciences field.

Because of the distance education program offered through DTI, I am helping to feed the world from my home office. While I am only able to the main campus occasionally, I have most of the same opportunities as on-campus students. I have traveled and worked out of four DTI research and extension centers and have met and worked with dozens of professors, researchers, and staff members. I would not be who I am today without the opportunities created through the distance education program at the DTI."
